University English Search Engine

Introduction

This is a manual for using the University English Search Engine designed to help staff members write in English for work purposes at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). UNIST’s goal is to become a world top 10 university by 2030, so it is important to attract prominent and promising faculty, students, and researchers from all over the world. This means that it may be necessary to set the administrative systems in a lingua franca for synchronized and cohesive communication.

Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) enables its users to collect specific web pages and build their own search engines. UNIST’s Language Education Center (LEC) has created the University English Search Engine by using Google CSE. LEC collected homepage addresses of the top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2015/16, limiting the lists to the United States, and filtered by faculty.

With this search engine, users can search for pragmatic expressions and sentences to use when writing documents. Since the collected web pages are produced by English native speakers, they are authentic resources with the potential to add value to non-native writers. This search engine can be an excellent tool for staff members. It simply requires users to type key words in the search box. Then, users are able to find real life examples of the sentence they are searching for.
